Beaconhouse A' Level Campus, Gulberg hosted the ‘ All Pakistan Beaconhouse Olympiad 2010' from February 5 to 7, 2010. The event included contests for Performing Arts, Film-making, Photography, Business Plan, Gaming, Impromptu Speech, GK Quiz, and many more. RA students  participated in the GC University Poster Competition. The theme was ‘Climb The Mountain, Discover The Nature'. Rida Tahir won the 2nd  prize amidst tough competitors from leading schools.

Zoya Nasir's art work won her the 2nd prize, and her team the 3rd prize in the Annual Art Competition at Aitchison College !!

The students of Resource Academia participated in the Annual Art Competition at Aitchison College . Four students, two each from O and A Level campuses, Zoya Nasir (A1), Bakhtawer Sultan (A1), Mariam Pervez (O3) and Sameen Iqbal (O2) participated in the event, the theme for which was ‘A Strange Experience'.

Resource Academia Senior School [A Level] held its first ‘Parent Teacher Meeting’ for the academic year 2009-10 on December 05, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The meeting provided parents with an opportunity to discuss their children’s academic progress and co-ordinate their efforts to work towards better academic performance in the First Term December Examinations, which will take place from December 15 to 24, 2008. The student Council members facilitated the parents and provided necessary assistance wherever possible. The conference was fairly well-attended by parents and students

Taekwondo means ‘The way to kick and punch…' The Taekwondo girls team of Resource Academia A Level participated in the Punjab Olympics 2009, held on the 19 th of November, 2009, at Wahdat Girls College and returned victorious. The event was one of the biggest sports competitions in Lahore , with a large number of schools and colleges participating.

Our seemingly delicate but extremely tough Resource Taekwondo girls kicked in real hard and secured the third position trophy for the school, after winning three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

SHAUKAT KHANUM MEMORIAL CANCER HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH CENTRE organized a breast cancer awareness week starting the 12th of October. Female students from Resource Academia were invited to attend the opening ceremony on the 13th of October.

A total of 28 girls attended the event with the theme, pink and white. Upon arrival, souvenirs and brochures were handed out to the students. The resident oncologists spoke about the symptoms, importance of early detection and treatment. The ambassador for this cause is Atiqa Odho, who also spoke on this occasion. Celebrities Faryal Ali Gohar and Reema also addressed the audience. The most interesting of the speakers were the female patients who suffered from cancer and have been treated at the hospital. They spoke of their fears, hope and success. This was followed by a Question-Answer session. The event ended after a thank you speech by the CEO of the hospital.

A Level Students from ten leading schools participated in the Inter-School Volley Ball Tournament that took place at the Resource Academia A Level Campus from October 11 to 16, 2009. After a series of very competitive matches, Beaconhouse won the trophy for the 1st position, Resource came 2nd , while teams from Lahore Alma and UCL came 3rd . Other participating schools were SICAS, SISA, Pak Turk International, The City School, Bloomfield Hall and Grand Charter School

Resource Academia Senior School organized an Inter-School Futsal Tournament that took place at the A Level Campus from October 6 to 9, 2009. Teams from nine leading schools participated in the sporting event. After a series of very spirited matches, LGS was declared the winner, the team from UCL came 2nd and Resource won the trophy for the third position. Other participating schools included Lahore American School , Pak Turk International, The City School, Grand Charter School, SISA and RA United.

Watching the fellow citizens of Swat being forced to move out of the warmth of their own shelter had a blowing impact on Pakistanis. Like everyone else, RA's SWERA felt obligated to cater to Swat's need to the best of its ability. Within a week, SWERA leaders Mahnoor Hayat and Shahbaz Sandhu, with their team, ventured out to the three campuses of RA. They were successful in collecting around 2 lakh rupees through immense efforts by all the students. The amount was then transferred to Edhi where RA was represented by Nida Javed and Kashif Rana. Without doubt, great pride has been brought to the school's name.

The international Physics Olympiad is a competition open to all secondary school students. It was started in 1967 in Warsaw , Poland , and is conducted in recognition of the growing significance of physics and the general education of secondary school students.

In Pakistan the competition is overseen by the Higher Education Commission. Students from all over Pakistan are invited in January of each year to participate in the first round screening examination, from which fifty candidates are short listed. During the summer these fifty students are invited to take part in a one month long training camp held at GIKi (Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology), in which fourteen students succeed in moving to the next round. A second camp is held in December of each year in which seven more students are eliminated after a competitive examination. In March, nearly one and a quarter years after the competition begins, only five candidates succeed in making it to the final round, and compete with secondary students from all over the world.

The final competition is held in a different host country each year. It consists of two five-hour examinations conducted over two days with a one day break in between. The first day is reserved for a theoretical examination consisting of three questions and day two for an experimental examination of two questions.

Resource Academia students have been in the final Team of five students representing Pakistan at the International Physics Olympiad every year since 2006. Awais Sher Bajwa went to Singapore in 2006. Muhammad Suleman Mehmood was in Iran in 2007 and Aneeq Zia was in Vietnam in 2008. This year two of our students, Zainulabideen Ali Khas and Harres Bin Tariq represented Pakistan .

The 40th International Physics Olympiad held in Merida , Mexico had three hundred and fifteen competitors form seventy countries. The journey took 47 hours for our students and was an exhausting one. Upon arrival they were met by their guide Andrea, who escorted the guests to their hotel to rest up for the Opening Ceremony of the Olympiad the next day, 11 th of July. Between the examinations, the visits to the famous archaeological sites like Uxmal and Itza, dinners and lunches held by the host country and the lectures by the likes of Nobel Laureate Mr. Joseph Taylor, the nine days of competition were over very quickly.

The highlight of the trip according to Zainulabideen was when he heard the sweetest words in his life “Congratulations, you won a Bronze”. When Harres found out that he too won the Bronze, he was thrilled at having achieved his dream. Of course the fact that the contestants got VIP protocol with Police escorts on all their trips was exciting as well. The halting of traffic so the students' VVIP bus could move through the traffic quickly reminded the students of home.

Besides bringing home the medals, Harres and Zainulabideen both agree that the friendships they forged, the experience of meeting people of other cultures and memories they brought back with them will be cherished forever.

The engines of the buses roared on Saturday, 15 th of November, at 7 in the morning. Everyone knocking into each other, occupied their seats and we left for Ketas Fort. It was a very pleasant and windy morning. From the very moment that we set off, interesting gossip and chit chat dominated the environment. As we proceeded towards our destination via the motorway, the real fun began. Dancing was inevitable with the lively music in the bus and most people completely outdid themselves.

We halted briefly at the first rest-area on the motorway where everyone got off for refreshments and photography. As the bus left the rest area, we saw two students running after the bus. Although they managed to get on the bus, they got appropriate treatment from Ms. Mashhadi! When the bus turned into a dance floor, the driver asked us to take our seats in exchange for continuing playing the music. After 2 hours, we stopped at Durab Lake where a dam is under construction. The area was full of thorny bushes and everyone joined the race in going down hill to the lake. The lake was a vast stretch of water, truly a mesmerizing sight. We had a one-hour stay at the rest area near Kalar Kahar where we had lunch.

On reaching the Katas Fort, everyone was very keen to discover its historical background. Ketas Mandir has roots in Hindu mythology. The Fort was built by Hindus centuries ago and was amongst the holy places for the Hindus and Buddhists. The story has it that when Rama's wife died here, he wept profusely and his tears formed a lake which never dries out. We also learnt that Al-Bairuni found the radius of the Earth during his stay at Ketas. The structure has become dilapidated with the passage of time, yet it still retains its past glory and remains a marvelous piece of architecture. The fort was on a hill so every one had to walk up a long flight of stairs to the top of the hill to see the ruins. The fort was quite big and we spent about two hours exploring it.

It was dark when we commenced our journey back home. Exhausted to death, we simply sat on our seats and soon drowsiness overcame most of the passengers. Ms. Mashhadi joined us for the return journey and we had tons of fun playing ‘Intakshari' with her. We stopped briefly at Kalar Kahar again but only for 10 minutes and everyone recharged for the rest of the journey. The buses then continued their long, winding trip back to Lahore. For a while the bus remained lively but within 30 minutes everyone was glued to their seats. The journey continued, continued and continued…….then finally we reached Lahore and one of our most memorable trips concluded.

This year Resource Academia introduced the system of elections to select the heads of the new student council. Anyone could apply for the posts of head boy, head girl, and the two deputies. After thorough screening, which included submission of essays on assigned topics and interviews by a panel, the names of the short listed candidates were put up.

2 Days before the Election…

The whole campus was gripped by an election mania. People were seen frantically making badges, asking their friends to support their candidate or else shouting at the top of their lungs (yes! It is quite an effective way of campaigning). Every candidate felt intimidated by the other one. The pendulum was constantly swinging in one direction or another. By the end of the day some clear indication as to who was going to win started to emerge.

1 Day before the Election…

The day started with even more frantic campaigning, everyone could be seen wearing a badge. The school was transformed into a battle arena for gladiators. It is funny to see how seriously people take some jobs (clearly, studies not being one of them). The school was draped with different banners and charts and posters as well. Shortly after 2, the candidates were taken to the seminar room to debate against one another and to prove their skills once and for all. Their nerves jangling, the candidates delivered impressive speeches, making their points, connecting with their audience, and gaining popularity. By the end of the day, some very tired students went home, waiting to cast their vote the next day.

Show Time…

t was the 12 th of November, bright, sunny and beautiful. Something of gigantic importance was taking place at the A level Campus of. Resource Academia. The new council heads were being elected. Everyone had their fingers crossed. The elections began shortly after eleven. The candidates were found to be standing near the election booth with worried faces. Shortly after 3, the final vote was cast and the counting began. The dead silence was pierced by the cries of hundreds of supporters when Ms Mashhadi announced the results.

After a short celebration, the students all went back home. Resource Academia had survived its first Elections.

Looks like I underestimated the number of brain cells of our adorable A1; thinking that they would not follow the ''Eid'' theme, the A2 came fully prepared. Dressed in glittery, colorful Lahengas and handsome Qurtas ; the hosts welcomed the newcomers who were looking equally pretty. The evening was filled with colours and girls gossiped (nature) about who was looking the best. Occasionally, I would hear A1 girls asking: "Do you think this Lahenga is nice?"...and the usual answer from the A2: "To say that it's nice would be a terrible lie".

Anoosha Zafar (apart from looking the most dashing) was officially announced as the Show-Stopper of the evening when she portrayed her talent of acting flawlessly. She talked at a speed of 100 miles/hour when she was Sana Afzal and the way she said: "Sahib-e-Aalam" really stole the show. The two skits were super hits and left the audience breathless with laughter...even Sana Afzal managed a smile. When talking about the skits, how can one forget the "Akhian milao kabhi akhian churao " between Ruwail and Talha; Sabeen as the ‘Overactress' had perfect comic timing as usual and Hasnain (most surprisingly) danced and set the stage on fire. At that point Hamza Malik played the role of Kerosene and further strengthened the fire with his newly-discovered singing talent.

When it comes to singing, how can the Music Society of R.A. be left unheard? Ahmad Asrar and Omar Ali entertained the audience with their Sajni and Kryptonite By this point everyone had started enjoying the full flow of the glittery welcome and when the Qawalli (prepared by the joint effort of the Student Council) was brought forth, the students actually joined in and everyone was mast in reciting the verses written again by the joint effort of the Council.

The food was good and so were the outfits. The magnitude of the fun increased ten times when the most special item of the evening was brought forth; the video showing Commander Hijab ( Don ) practising and teaching his (pardon...her) students. The girls who were really boys (still remember Zainab, Maria and Taabina doing our make-up) acted in a way that no one could control their laughter and the boys finally got to know what really happens in the Taekwando classes. I clearly remember Ruwail saying, "Awesome,yaaar!" after she had seen herself spanking the Don ...
To sum it all up, it was an evening worth watching and all enjoyed themselves. Even Samia managed to forget Biology for a moment and concentrate on what was going on, surprising huh...?

RA students participated in the Punjab Olympics from October 31 to November 05, 08 at the Punjab Stadium. The event was organized by the Punjab Olympics Association and with 82 participating schools; it is the largest sports event ever to be held in Lahore . Resource Academia students participated in five sporting events, which included Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Athletics and Taekwondo (only girls).

Twenty-two students, including seven girls and fifteen boys from Classes A1 and A2, formed the Resource Academia Punjab Olympics Team. RA Girls won the 2 nd position in the Girls Taekwondo Event after winning one gold, one silver and four bronze medals. RA boys won one silver and three bronze medals in athletics. RA held the fourth position in College Athletics at the Lahore Level.

The medal winners were:

Resource Academia arranged a ‘Hiking and Trekking Certificate Course' through association with Adventure Foundation, an organization dedicated to the promotion of outdoor activities for the youth. Forty-four students from Classes A1 and A2 participated in the hiking and trekking trip to Thandiani, Nathiagali and Abbotabad. The expedition was led by the sports teacher, Ms. Lubna Afzaal and Mr. Imran Ahmed. Nine other faculty members accompanied the students. The participants received training for physical fitness, camping techniques and hiking expertise. At the Abbotabad base camp, students trained for excelling at skills including the climbing bar, rope jumping, balancing bar and log walking. A memorable moment was crossing the Shankiari River , where the young and eager hikers learnt to cross a running river. Another highlight of the camping trip was hiking up to reach the Mukhspuri Top.

A group of students from Resource Academia's Class of A1 participated in the Asian Regionals of the Fifteenth International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC). The aim of this competition was to enhance the real world practical science skills of the students. During the first stage of the competition, the students developed a 40 page proposal for the design of a space settlement, in the earth's orbit. The proposal was no simple one, requiring details of things as varied as the sources of energy to the internal designs of the houses present on the settlement. The students worked day and night (literally) to complete the project. The end result was that, out of the 46 teams participating in the competition, Team Resource qualified among the top eight teams. Now, Team Resource has been invited to India to take part in the semi-finals of Asian Regionals of the ISSDC. If the Resource team qualifies, it will then be able to take part in the international finals of the ISSDC held at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston , Texas , USA during summer 08.

Musical evenings with Atif Aslam are becoming an annual tradition at Resource Academia. Atif Aslam is one of the most popular singers amongst the youth, attributed with hits like Aadat, Woh Lamhey, Doorie and Tere Bin. Atif holds a special regard for the Punjab Group since his musical career got established while he was a student of Punjab Institute of Computer Science. A chilly winter evening brought together students from Playgroup to A Levels, their parents and faculty members from all three campuses together at the Al-Hamra Cultural Complex at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The anxiously awaited occasion saw students arriving well in time, in spite of their first-term examinations being in progress. Students from Playgroup to Class 8 were accompanied by their parents, while the OL and AL students were excited to be without theirs. The students were in a festive mood and their efforts to dress very stylishly were evident! The first performer of the evening was Malku, a Punjabi folk singer, who sang a medley of ‘bhangra' and folk songs. Next came Natasha, an enchanting and vivacious upcoming singer and performer, who left the audience asking for more. Hashim Bukhari of 01A exhibited his singing talent and received praise for his rap singing. Atif Aslam made a dramatic entry and completely captivated the audience with his singing and performance. The students hung on to his every song, cheered him excitedly and sang along too, while a few demonstrated their dancing proficiency. The ardent fans could not be satiated and kept asking for more. The liveliness of the singer matched the equally animated crowd and everyone left still humming their favourite song by Atif Aslam.
An unforgettable experience indeed!

Thirty teams, a round/robin/format comprising, four whole days of celebrating.

Thirty teams, an eager debating society present to welcome them and a round robin format comprising three whole days of debating to give every team a fair chance; in short, all the ingredients were there for an awesome debating competition and they aptly coalesced to give the fun filled Resource Cup '07.

All the debating fraternity of Lahore was there from the so called cool clique of the school debater to the more mature and southing ones.

The eight teams that managed to make it to the quarter finals after four rounds of intensive debating were UET, ITC, LGS JT, LGS DEFENCE, JJ MAIN, LACAS, LUMS and NGS.

Only two of the teams survived to go on to the finals; they being LGS JT, and UET, both clinching well deserved spots and being undefeated up till now.

The topic for the final day was that this house believes that religious studies should be made compulsory.

After a close fight, which was reflected in the fact that it was a split decision, UET managed to pull a win because of their more cogent arguments.

Hambul Moeed of UET was declared the best speaker while Mohsin Ashraf, also from UET, won the best adjudicator award for his unbiased decisions as a judge – a fitting end to a joyous competition.

‘The Thirteenth Night' , an adaptation of Twelfth Night, a comedy written by William Shakespeare, was performed by RADS (the Resource Academia Dramatic Society) at Alhamra, on November 10, 07. The Thirteenth Night was shortened and abridged even more than the abridged version of the play. The reasons for dramatically axing a classical piece are the same as inventing one day cricket instead of test matches. The adaptation was like the ‘Twenty/20' of the original play. Audiences included students from Classes 8 to A2 and their parents.

The Chairperson's arrival at Alhamra marked the beginning of the event and her presence was immensely appreciated by the cast and crew, and the management of the A Level Campus.

The play begins with a shipwreck in which one twin, the sister Viola, survives, while the other twin, the brother, Sebastian, is lost. Viola, in order to protect herself in a strange land, changes her guise and pretends to be a man, after which she is able to find employment at the Duke's palace. The story that follows is a sequence of hilarious events and confusion caused by her deception. The chaos increases when her brother, having survived the storm, arrives at the same city. Both, sister and brother are unaware of each others' presence while people who meet them, mistake them for the other, causing great confusion.

The play was a huge success due to the untiring efforts of the director, Ms Rubab Uppal, the brilliant performances by the young actors, and the support of the back stage group. The actors carried out their roles and guises in a becoming fashion. The audience loved the cracks and jokes, and provided an enthusiastic response. The performances, the elaborate costumes and stage set-up, particularly the back drop, all received appreciation from the audiences. Ms Rubab was commended on her expertise in the direction of the play. Sarah Moin Durrani handled the lights and special effects and Ahmed Hassan managed sounds and special effects. Shahraiz Chishti recorded the sound effects for the play.

Renowned stage play director, Omair Tahir, stage actor, Danyal Raheel and crtic and journalist, Talath Naqvi judged the performances and announced the following winners;

The A1 Welcome Party on October 27, 07 was a part of the ongoing tradition at Resource Academia to welcome the newly enrolled class of A1. Owing to Ms Mashhadi's invitation, administrative staff members from the Middle/Senior and the Pre-Junior Campus attended.

The campus sparkled with tasteful lighting arrangements and a jazzy stage. The white and black setting contributed towards the theme of the evening ‘Rock'. Most students were strikingly dressed to imitate their favorite rock stars with colored hair, metallic accessories and funky clothes. The Head Boy, Head Girl and Council Members welcomed the guests, and then the Principal, Ms John declared the program to have begun.

The multi-skilled students presented a series of songs, skits, interviews and performances. Privileged A1 students were bestowed with creative titles like ‘Bil batori', ‘Mein bantay bantay reh gaya ', and ‘gol gappa', which most received gracefully. The ‘Dude' and ‘Dudedess' of the evening awards were presented to Bilal Durrani and Amna Liaqat. The last performance of the evening was ‘Kahan hai tu' by Sadiq, accompanied by several frenzied dancers. Dinner was then served, towards which most people diverted their attention, except the few who continued to sing and dance. The dinner accompanied by ‘halwa puri' and green tea, was a fitting conclusion to a fun-filled evening.

The World Wide Waldens is a web-based service learning project offering young people an opportunity to apply their knowledge, creativity and energy in putting Henry David Thoreau's words into action. Walden Woods, with Walden Pond at its center, has inspired people from around the world. Many consider it to be the birthplace of the environmental movement. However, there's a “Walden” in every community – a place of environmental or historic significance – in need of protection. As you begin to look around your neighborhood, I'm sure you will identify areas that need your advocacy and stewardship.

Resource Academia's First Contribution to World Wide Waldens

The City Government Model High School for Girls
The Model High School, like other under-funded government schools in Pakistan, is lacking in a clean healthy environment for students, the main reason being inadequate funding and the need for a large number of basic facilities. As a team, we decided to target as many aspects of the environment as possible. The first stage was cleaning up the compound area which was severely littered with refuse. Furthermore, maintenance of cleanliness was encouraged by placing a number of large bins for disposal of rubbish. In the second stage, our Walden team talked to the students about keeping their environment clean. Our students made posters and charts for their respective classes about the benefits of preserving the natural environment. Our students were very well informed about the harmful effects of pollution and the advantages of preventing it. We were very enthusiastic and took an active part in the class discussion. The third stage targeted the bare school compound. A small part of this compound was furnished with swings and benches to provide a recreational area for the students. Next hibiscus trees were planted along the boundary of the compound. The planting process was restricted to an extent as a fair amount of construction work is going to take place in the summer. In the end we would like to thank our principle donor, The H and H Group, whose generous funding made it all possible.

Providing Access to Clean Water for Students
In Pakistan, water sanitation and filtration is one of the biggest problems. This was no different in the school we targeted for our environmental project mainly due to lack of funds and proper management. The school did have a water cooler but it was not working. Therefore, the water that was supplied to the toilets was used as drinking water. In a country like Pakistan, tap water is not clean and is the cause of several diseases like cholera. Thus, the Walden Team took the initiative of making arrangements for a clean water supply. We used the donations to purchase a new water cooler and a water filter.

Resource Academia arranged a farewell party for the departing O3 and the A2 classes on April 27, 07 . Many days of arborous preparations finally led to the long-awaited event. The party began at 6:00 p.m. with a number of dramatic entrances by the various classes, each attempting an arrival more striking than the other. The spectacular arrival of 03 students on a tractor and in Land Cruisers marked the beginning of the evening. O3 students were stylishly dressed and very excited. Students of A1 dressed in traditional Pakistani clothes, with the boys and girls wearing conventional shalwar kameez. The girls added glamour with their glittering ‘bangles' and colorful ‘parandas'. Students of the A2 class entered in high-tech cars and on a car lifter. The boys looked very sophisticated in their suits while the girls were very elegantly clad in saris.

The programme commenced with announcements of titles for students with outstanding and unusual qualities. The awards were followed by entertaining displays of acting talent, amazing singing performances and a some insight into the school life of O and A Levels students. Most of the performances were appreciated by an equally enthusiastic audience. Dinner was then served but the party continued until long after that. What a great evening!

RA sent a SWERA representative to the Lebanese embassy in Islamabad on 14 th October, 06 . The school had collected Rs 30,000 for the noble cause of helping the affected children in Lebanon due to the bombing on 8 th October. Zain-ul-Abideen of A1 represented the school at the Lebanese Embassy. Representatives from four other schools also went, namely; LACAS, LGS (GT), Bloomfield Hall and Care International. The schools that had the top five donations in Lahore , were invited to be a part of the team, and a total of Rs 350,000 was donated. The press provided coverage to the event. The Embassy graciously welcomed the student team. The Ambassador delivered an appreciative speech and thanked the students and schools by name.
